1. International Practice Seminar - Away From Home
Date: Thursday 11 March 2010, 2-6pm
Venue: A Foundation, LondonBooking: To book your FREE place at this event email Simona Dell-Agli (Maximum of 2 tickets per person)

March 2010 sees two project launches from Artquest focussing on the importance of international practice for London-based practitioners: our improved and expanded Artroute site, providing arts-specific advice for artists travelling around the world; and our fully tested and improved Artelier website, a free online global studio exchange network.
These initiatives both create valuable opportunities for international travel, dialogue and collaboration, and make the case as to the importance of working internationally to London-based artists. Artroute and Artelier orient practitioners in the art ecologies of the nuanced art scenes around the world, giving them access to networks and contacts, making travel more effective.
To mark the launch of these online projects, Artquest present Away From Home, an open, practice-led, panel dialogue that considers the mechanics of international collaboration and the challenges – and benefits – to artists who choose to work overseas.
The seminar will be hosted at the A Foundation, London, alongside the exhibition Journeys With No Return. For full details of the afternoon visit the Artquest website.

Curators: Alice Sharp, Peter Cross and Levent Calikoglu
Exhibition organiser: Denizhan Ozer
A Foundation is the London focus of a touring exhibition to Istanbul, London and Berlin 2009/10. Inspired by the celebrated Turkish writer and political figure Nazim Hikmet's book of poems Journeys With No Return, this project explores reflections of Turkish migration on contemporary art.
The exhibition features twelve artists from Germany, Great Britain and Turkey in works that are new to UK audiences – six of which are unveiled for the first time. The artists balance the local with the global, their subjective sense of identity with cultural dissemination that potentially knows no borders. Using popular music, rap, cinematic conventions, anthropology and documentary they exploit archive images, cultural stereotypes and information systems.

"We're in a group show with nothing in common!"
Date: Tuesday 9 February 2010, 6.30 - 8.30pm Venue: The Tabernacle, Westbourne Park Booking: Tickets £5. Sign up and book on Emerge Website
As practitioners we often find ourselves in situations where we're organising shows ourselves. Be this an exhibition with ex college friends or an open studio show, these can find us working with artists with very different practices with no clear connection or theme.
This session ‘We're in a group show with nothing in common!' considers approaches to curating a disparate and unconnected collection of works and will advise on key issues to consider and exploit such as who or what goes where? How do you make it coherent for your audience?
Bring along your art (or a photograph of your work) for our participative workshop led by Nick Kaplony, Artquest Programme Co-ordinator and Exhibitions officer at Pump House Gallery, along with invited guest advisors and curators Matt Roberts and Susie Gray.
This event is part of a new professional development seminar series for emerging artists that Emerge is running in partnership with Artquest. For more information about this partnership, the event and biographies of those involved please visit the Artquest website.
Please note that Artquest are not administering bookings for this event. To book a place please visit the emerge website.

4. Emerge session - Setting up an artist led space
"I want to run an artists' run space, but I don't know how"

Date: Monday 22nd February, 6.30pm-8.30pm Venue: Dugdale Centre, Enfield Booking: Tickets £5. Sign up and book on Emerge Website

This event is for anyone wanting to put on a show or project in a space that isn't already a gallery. The event will address crucial questions in getting a space up and running - How do you find a space? What do you need to insure? And, of course, why am I doing it?
This course will cover all aspects of setting up an artist run space, look at the advantages and potential pitfalls of such an activity, taking participants through the practical and philosophical reasons for embarking on this kind of project. The course will be led by Artquest's Russell Martin, an experienced visual artist and writer who has set up and run two artist run spaces in London over the past ten years.
Advisors on hand will include practitioners and experts with a wealth of experience on setting up spaces such as Katie Schwab and Roger White and Clare Moloney. For more details about the contributors visit the Artquest website.
Please note that Artquest are not administering bookings for this event. To book a place please visit the emerge website.

7. Creative Graduates,Creative Futures
An important new study has been completed on the careers of creative graduates. Creative Graduates creative futures is a study that looked at the early career patterns of more than 3,500 graduates in practice based art, design, crafts and media subjects. The findings of the study have now been published.
Among the key findings were:
  • 3 out of 4 graduates have worked in the creative industries and in their field of expertise since graduating. At the time of the survey 4 out of 5 graduates were in paid work, the majority in creative jobs and achieving their careers.
  • Nearly half of the graduates interviewed had multiple jobs, combining employment with self-employment or developing their practice.
  • 79% of graduates in work at the time of the survey were working part time in at least one of their jobs or work related activities.
  • Post graduation internships and unpaid work are an established feature of the creative industries landscape and a common strategy used for finding work or gaining relevant experience.
  • Teaching is an important career destination with one third of respondents having had experience in teaching (generally in the arts).
See the Creative Graduates website for the full report.
